DJ Ear Trainer

A DJ's ear is trained by practising. The ear trainer has three exercises, each on three levels: beatmatching on two Pioneer CDJ-3000-style decks, spotting which EQ band was changed, and finding the start of a phrase. The club tracks are randomly generated, different every time, so you can practise without getting bored.

Ear trainer

Train your ears like in the booth: match two tracks by ear, recognise which EQ band changed and catch the start of the phrase. All sounds are generated in your browser. Put your headphones on (wired if possible; Bluetooth adds delay).

Genre
  1. Player 1 (track A) is already playing. Player 2 holds track B, same genre, different tempo.
  2. Press PLAY on Player 2 and match the tempo with the TEMPO fader or the fine buttons, listening for the kicks galloping.
  3. Once the tempo matches, line up the kicks with the jog wheel: press and hold on its edge and drag in a circle, as if spinning it. CUE takes you back to the start. Then press Check.

How it works

  1. Beatmatching: track A is already playing; start track B, at a different tempo, match it with the pitch fader (±6, ±10, ±16 or WIDE) and the fine buttons, then line up the kicks with the jog wheel.
  2. EQ: listen to the original and the modified version and guess which EQ band was changed.
  3. Phrasing: hit the button exactly on the first beat of the next phrase, counting the 32 beats of a club phrase.
  4. Pick a level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and a genre; your best scores are saved so you can see your progress.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any equipment?

No. Everything runs in your browser, on a computer or a phone. Headphones help you hear the differences better.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. At beginner level the tempo differences are big and easy to hear; at intermediate and advanced they get smaller and smaller.

What tracks does it use?

Electronic club tracks generated in the browser, in 7 genres, different every time. You don't need your own collection.

Why practise beatmatching when there's a Sync button?

Sync can't help when the tempo is analysed wrong, when a track has a drifting tempo or when you play vinyl. A trained ear gets you through any situation in the booth.
